When we bought our house in Lincoln Park there was only one person I wanted to work with on the design, and that was Summer Thornton. Her work has been featured in House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Luxe Interiors+Design, Domino, Lonny, Modern Luxury Interiors and more. Most notably she was named one of the top 50 interior design firms in the world by 1st Dibs.
After finding her first house on a blog and then scouring her website, I just knew she would be the perfect fit for my eclectic yet polished taste. Summer is creative, a badass boss lady and she’s also a mother of two. I’ve had the privilege to get to know her over the past few years and when she agreed to my interview I was over the moon. Basically, I’m obsessed with her, and I just know you will be too!
What is the best thing about being a mom?
Seeing your children share in your passions. For example, my daughter India is super creative and we share a love for all things decorative.
What is the worst part about being a mom?
Seeing your worst qualities reflected in them…no need for examples here.
What habit to do you hope to pass down to your kids?
A midwestern work ethic.
What habit do you hope not to pass down?
How have you changed since becoming a mom?
I look a lot older and worry about everything. Living in constant fear is something nobody mentions when you are about to become a mom! The Momma Bear syndrome is real I am constantly in protection mode.
The best piece of advice you would give a mom of young kids?
I have always been a very confident person (thanks Mom and Dad) but when I had children I noticed how I started to compare myself to other Moms. It’s a dangerous game. My Mom told me once “Don’t compare your insides with other’s outsides”. I try to keep this in mind and I’ve learned to stop comparing. I’m a really good Mom in some ways and in other ways I totally fail. Here’s hoping the good sticks!
What is your Theme Song?
Icona Pop “I love it” or as I call it “I don’t care, I love it”
What is the secret to being a dope ass mom:
Don’t try so hard!
How has your relationship to a higher power changed?
Having a child grow inside of me was more than enough proof that there is a creator.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Sleep, Creative output, and wine!
What late-night food do you crave?
I crave sugar…I’m majorly addicted to childlike candy. Right now I’m eating candy hearts by the handful.
What do you do to relax?
I’m a big bather. I love a hot bath with a glass of wine and a magazine. I also love bathing with my daughter, it’s our special time together without the boys!
How has Motherhood changed your career?
This is a tough one. I’m a super driven person at work and motherhood has definitely impacted that. I travel a decent amount but I have to watch how many projects I take out of Chicago because I don’t want to be away too much. I also take most Fridays off to spend at home with my kids and doing regular mom stuff like Target and playdates. The thing about me is I don’t mix the two…I have to be all Mom when I’m at home and all boss when I’m at work. I have a one-track mind, I’m not a multitasker. I need to focus, no diaper changes and conference calls for me.
What are three words to describe yourself?
Driven, Creative, Loyal.
What are three things in your bag that I couldn’t live without?
Cinnamon Altoids, Lipstain and bandaids!
